Global Brand Sustainability Vision: We delight consumers with preferred products that deliver superior oral health, while at the same time conserving resources, protecting the environment, and supporting Procter & Gamble programs to improve the lives of those who need it most.
As the global leader in oral care, we have made it our responsibility to improve oral care around the world. We’re making improvements in oral care across the globe by focusing on three key areas:
- Oral Health Education for Children: Dental decay is the most common childhood disease worldwide, affecting 60 percent of children across the globe. Through education, we give children the tools they need to create a solid oral care foundation and maintain good oral care habits into adulthood. To date, we have helped more than 20,000 children worldwide.
- Access to Dental Care in Underprivileged Communities: Lack of health services, lack of access to health services and cost mean too many people are not getting the oral care and education they need to maintain good oral care. Oral diseases are linked to socio-economic status with the poor and disadvantaged carrying the greatest burden. In partnership with regional partners, we help these communities through free dental exams, products and education.
- Professional Support and Education: Supporting and educating the professional dental community continues to be one of our primary commitments. Through www.dentalcare.ca, a P&G-supported portal, we offer the dental professional community case studies, posters, abstracts, interactive tools and more than 150 continuing education courses that provide professionals opportunities to stay abreast of key research and educate their patients on oral health conditions, dental procedures and proper oral hygiene techniques.
Through education, financial assistance and community outreach, Oral-B and Crest help millions of people worldwide understand, improve and maintain their oral care. We are also dedicated to supporting and advancing the global dental professional community through the resources, education and training.
Oral-B Social Responsibility by Region
1. Brazil & Mexico: Dentistas Do Bem
Key Area Focus: Oral Health Education for Children
Poor nutrition, sanitation and hygiene, lack of access to clean water and dental professionals – all of these contribute to issues with oral care in developing countries across Latin America. At P&G, we recognize our responsibility as a global leader in oral care to be part of the solution.
Since 2010, P&G has partnered with “Dentistas do Bem” (Dentists for Good) to provide free dental exams and dental hygiene education to underprivileged children in Brazil. Since inception, the program has helped children in 26 states in Brazil where our commitment to the program has helped this initiative grow to a great success. “Dentistas do Bem” is nowadays the largest specialized volunteer network in the world working towards children’s oral health in 11 countries across Latin America as well as Portugal to replicate the positive change in oral health and transform more smiles.
Our goals are to improve oral health in children from 11 to 17 years old, and provide them much-needed and valuable access to oral care education and free dental treatments. Treatment includes curative and preventive care as well as any necessary dental procedures and educational information. To date, we have helped over 20,000 children have access to free dental evaluations and treatments and worked with more than 5,000 dental professionals as volunteers who make this program a success.
2. US: Healthier Moms Stronger Babies
Focus: Professional Support and Education & Access to Dental Care in Underprivileged Communities
Lack of regular oral care hygiene and routine professional oral care check-ups among pregnant women has been linked to pre-term births according to recent studies. This connection is quite significant given the current preterm birth rate in the U.S. is 11.5 percent and preterm birth is #1 cause of infant death in the U.S. Given these very serious statistics, Crest and Oral-B recognize the responsibility they have to raise awareness and educate the public about the connection between oral health and preterm birth.
In 2015, Crest & Oral-B partnered with the March of Dimes, a national organization whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality, to create the Healthier Moms Stronger Babies initiative. This initiative helps women who are pregnant or considering getting pregnant make a positive, intentional and sustained change in their oral health, including getting regular professional checkups and using products such Crest Pro-Health toothpaste and mouthwash, which have ingredients that fight gingivitis.
To kick off the partnership, P&G involved its employees to spearhead outreach programs including building and distributing oral care kits for expectant moms that contain Crest and Oral-B products as well as educational materials to local pregnancy centers. The program also engaged medical professionals where oral care kits were distributed to dentists and hygienists for expecting mothers. To date, more than 6,000 oral care kits have been distributed. Many other initiatives are expected for the Healthier Moms Stronger Babies program including expanding oral care kit distribution and providing education classes at hospitals focused on Oral Health & Pregnancy to OBGYNs and OBGYN nurses.
3. Panama: National Health Journeys
Focus: Access to Dental Care in Underprivileged Communities
With over one million people in Panama living below the poverty line, access to basic medical care, including oral care, continues to be a challenge. As one of the worldwide leaders in oral care, P&G is committed to helping provide oral care resources to those who need it most. P&G, Panama´s Board of Health and United Way Panama partnered on National Health Journeys, a program to improve oral health in Panama by providing access to education and health products at participating schools in underprivileged communities. To date, we have provided more than 1,000 children with oral care assistance through National Health Journeys, with goals to reach many more children in the future through this ongoing program.
4. Korea: Collaboration with Lotte Mart
Focus: Oral Health Education for Underprivileged Children
P&G remains committed to the needs of children living in South Korea who have limited access to adequate dental care and education.
In 2015, we worked in close collaboration with Lotte Mart, South Korea’s leading discount store, to provide much-needed oral care treatments, education, and products to underprivileged children. Through the program, Oral-B offered a range of preventive and diagnostic services including dental exams and educational sessions.
P&G hosted dentists and hygienists to examine children’s oral health and apply fluoride to their teeth. During the educational sessions, children learned how to brush correctly, how to keep their toothbrushes clean, and how important it is to maintain good oral hygiene. All children who participated in these programs were given Oral-B Stages products and Oral-B CrossAction toothbrushes to make sure they had the tools at home to follow the steps they learned at the events.
5. Germany: RTL Spendenmarathon
Focus: Access to Dental Care in Underprivileged Communities
Approximately ten percent of families in Germany with children have incomes that lie below the poverty line. Oral-B is committed to making a positive contribution to these underserved communities through volunteer contributions and collaborating with key partners like RTL, a German TV station, and its annual Spendenmarathon, which is a fundraiser that raises money for children in need. In 2015, we contributed to RTL Spendenmarathon to raise money for children through this year’s International Dental Show. P&G donated one euro for every visitor who came to the Oral-B booth and tried the new SmartSeries electric toothbrush, resulting in a donation of more 10,000 euros to the RTL Spendenmarathon. The event allowed P&G to help raise awareness among the professional dental community and provided a way for them to get involved in a program that improves the lives of patients in their communities.
